10 Simple Ways to Build Your Self-Confidence

Confidence isn’t something we’re born with in fixed amounts. It’s more like a muscle: the more you train it, the stronger it becomes. And the best part? You don’t need to make dramatic changes overnight. Confidence grows slowly and steadily through the way you treat yourself and the habits you build each day.

Woman in a red hoodie smiles with hands on hips against a plain background. Text reads: "Body posture helps your confidence."

I often describe confidence as the quiet kind of strength, the sort that helps you feel steady, capable, and at ease in your own skin. It’s not about being loud or brash. It’s about trust: trust that you can handle what life throws at you.

To help with this, I’ve put together a short audio recording you can use to boost your confidence and wellbeing. Listening daily for a week or more can make a real difference, and sometimes the people around you notice before you do.

Here are ten practical ways to nurture that trust and grow your confidence, one step at a time.

1. Talk Kindly to Yourself

The way you speak to yourself matters. If your inner voice is constantly critical, it chips away at your self-belief. Try to notice when negative thoughts pop up and gently replace them with something more supportive. A simple rule of thumb: if you wouldn’t say it to a friend, don’t say it to yourself.

2. Stand Tall

Posture really does affect how you feel. Standing tall, shoulders back, and head high can instantly change your state of mind. You might even try the “Superman” or “Wonder Woman” pose - hands on hips, legs apart to broadcast strength both to yourself and the world around you.

3. Learn Something New

Confidence thrives on evidence that you can grow. Whether it’s picking up a new hobby, brushing up on a skill, or simply reading about a topic that interests you, every bit of learning adds to your sense of competence and accomplishment.

4. Surround Yourself with Positive People

We absorb the energy of those around us. Spend time with people who uplift you, believe in you, and celebrate your wins. Limit time with those who constantly criticise or drag you down. The company you keep shapes your self-image more than you may realise.

5. Set Small, Realistic Goals

Confidence builds from success, and success comes more easily when your goals are achievable. Break bigger dreams into smaller steps and celebrate each milestone. Every tick on your to-do list is a reminder that you’re capable. And they all add up. In July Reiki North Wales, the business name Jackie and I use for our Reiki Training, won an award for being the best Holistic trainer in Wales.

6. Be Kind to Yourself

Nobody gets everything right all the time. Mistakes and failures are part of the process of growth. Instead of beating yourself up, treat yourself with compassion. Failure isn’t the end of the road, it’s how we learn and it’s often the beginning of wisdom.

7. Practice Gratitude

Gratitude shifts your perspective from what’s lacking to what’s already good. Take a moment each day to notice three things you appreciate. They don’t have to be big, sometimes the smallest sparks of gratitude create the biggest boost in resilience and confidence. The many positive benefits of gratitude

8. Focus on Your Strengths

We’re often quick to dwell on flaws and slow to acknowledge what we do well. Make a list of your strengths, skills, and past successes. Remind yourself regularly of what you bring to the table. And remember: your journey is yours, comparisons to others rarely help you.

9. Take Care of Your Body

Your physical wellbeing and your confidence are deeply connected. Nourish yourself with good food, get enough sleep, move your body in ways that feel good, and take breaks from screens. Feeling physically strong and healthy naturally supports emotional strength.

10. Step Out of Your Comfort Zone

Real growth happens at the edges of comfort. Challenge yourself to try something new, speak up, or face a fear. The first step may feel scary, but every time you push your boundaries, you prove to yourself that you’re capable of more than you think.

Bonus: Help Others

Acts of kindness don’t just benefit the receiver — they give you a sense of purpose and self-worth too. I recently gave a talk to the local Arthritis Society about pain relief, sharing techniques that don’t rely on medication. In a few minutes everyone there was able to reduce their level of pain. The joy I felt afterwards was a reminder that giving is one of the quickest routes to feeling good about yourself.

Building Confidence, Brick by Brick

Think of confidence like building a house. Each small action you take is a brick — and over time, those bricks add up to something strong, sturdy, and lasting. You don’t need to do everything at once; even focusing on one of these steps can create a shift.

Which of these ideas feels most doable for you right now? Try it out, give yourself credit, and notice how the foundation of your self-confidence grows stronger each day.
